I have one word for the month of July...HOT! Not just any kind of HOT either. Don't misunderstand me, Houston heat and humidity is not pleasant by any means, but when the temperature is 113 and "feels like" 124 with 60% humidity, you know you are in trouble! But, we did not let that ruin our fun...
Jesse and I started July with a bang, celebrating American Independence Day with the American Chamber here in Abu Dhabi. The seated dinner was full of expats working for oil companies, law firms, the military, etc. After indulging in gourmet hot dogs and listening to some guest speakers, we all went out on the terrace of the St. Regis for a private fireworks show over the beach. Very cool!
One advantage to living here is that our water and electricity are paid for, so our new landscaping received ample water and sunshine in addition to my husband's green thumb. It's amazing how much the plants have grown since we planted them a few short months ago. Lots of cactus, bougainvilla, and native grasses. We also have a mango tree on the side of our house, and surprise! It produced a TON of juicy mangos this summer. 
The end of July marked the beginning of Ramadan for the Muslim community, where they fast all day long from dawn until dusk for an entire month. Even Jesse and the other non-muslims in his office had to observe the fasting (no food, water, or chewing gum) during the day. Some would consider this a great opportunity to broaden one's understanding of a different culture...
Since I am not one of those people, I used this month of fasting and miserable heat as an opportunity to fly back to the US and visit friends and family back home. Jesse joined me for a nice 10 day vacation in Houston where the temperature was a cool 98 degrees :-) I will elaborate more on our visit home in the next post--Big Green Tractors, Target! and all things Texas...
